ASSOCIATED CHURCHES RISING STARS PROGRAM AT LINCOLN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

In 2011 Covenant joined the Associated Churches Rising Stars Program at Lincoln Elementary School on Cook Road. The vision statement of Rising Stars is to empower children through Christian values to become the pacesetters for the next generation, building community, teaching character education and supporting the entire family. Rising Stars brings schools and churches together to bless the children of our community.

Covenant’s goal is to share the love of Jesus and to be a support system for the staff, teachers, children and families of Lincoln School.

Study Connection – Making a Difference

As part of Covenant’s partnership with Lincoln Elementary School, each week during the school year volunteers gather with students one-on-one to help with homework, improve reading skills, and offer general support. A small investment of your time can make a huge difference in the life of a child.

Tutors meet with their assigned student October through May on Wednesday afternoons at Lincoln from 2:40-4:00. After a quick “How was your day?” and a snack, the energy observed just moments before becomes subdued and the buzzing of learning starts taking place. As you look around the room, you see two heads bent over each table concentrating on reading books, or math worksheets, or any number of learning aids that each tutor is given to assist their students. It is a sight that truly warms a person’s heart. At 4:00, the bookbags are packed, good-byes are said and the students and tutors head home.

We at Covenant are proud to learn that many of our students have earned recognition as good school citizens or as members of the honor roll. We are happy to be there to cheer these young people on to being the best that they can be. Their situations at home may be a bit unsteady, but they know that they can count on someone being at Covenant each week to encourage them and offer them help with their school work.
